Episode #418
Airs Sunday August 30th
On Sunday, NewsHour Weekend examines new research showing Holocaust survivors may pass some of their traumatic stress on to their children. The study reveals that traumatic events can alter a person's body chemistry, meaning the effects can be carried through generations, which increases the likelihood of developing stress disorders. NewsHour's Stephen Fee reports. Also on Sunday, NewsHour Weekend profiles South African photographer and activist Zanele Muholi, whose mission is to create visibility for black lesbian and transgender communities in her home country through her work. Her latest exhibit is currently on display at the Brooklyn Museum through November 2015.

Episode #417
Previously aired Saturday August 29th
On Saturday, on the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, NewsHour Weekend wraps up the weeklong series, Katrina: 10 Years Later. First, NewsHour explores the changes people endured after the storm, when floodwaters cleared and the public moved on but homes were washed away. In excerpts from a forthcoming documentary, "Forced Change," by filmmaker Rennick Soholt, NewsHour follows the lives of two New Orleanians who left the city for good after the storm and who are still trying to piece together what home means to them. Later, NewsHour Weekend profiles Leah Chase, the chef and co-owner of the legendary New Orleans Creole eatery, Dooky Chase. After decades of running the restaurant, which had become a landmark in the city's oldest black neighborhood, Chase saw her business, home and virtually everything she owned wash away. Ten years ago, at age 82, she resolved to rebuild and start over.

On Sunday, NewsHour Weekend examines how the environment is rebounding in the residual radioactive zones of Chernobyl. Nearly three decades after an explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine released large amounts of radioactive particles in the atmosphere -- much of which spread to residential areas -- nature and wildlife appear to be flourishing in the places vacated by humans. Tom Clarke reports.

On Saturday, NewsHour Weekend explores Puerto Rico's debt crisis amid new austerity measures. Because the U.S. territory is a commonwealth, not a state, the island is unable to access bankruptcy to restructure its debt for government-owned corporations and municipalities. This unique position has given rise to a debate about whether to amend the laws as leaders search for new areas of economic growth. Special correspondent Chris Bury reports.

On Sunday, NewsHour Weekend explores the rise of solar energy in Hawaii. In some parts of the state, where many homeowners earn federal and state tax credits for using rooftop panels, the local utility has slowed down approvals of new solar systems, saying abundant users may threaten the safety and reliability of the power grid. As the popularity of rooftop solar spreads, many Americans may soon enter the same gridlock. NewsHour special correspondent Mike Taibbi reports.

On Saturday, NewsHour Weekend profiles Hawaiian residents who are living off the grid. The combination of sky-high electricity prices and abundant sunshine have made installing solar panels enormously popular. And while most of those who have installed panels still remain tied to the local electrical grid in order to store energy they produce, some residents have also installed their own battery storage systems to move off the grid completely.

The circumstances of the shooting and the resulting protests and civil unrest sparked a vigorous debate and discussion of race relations and the use of police force nationwide that still continues today.

On Sunday, NewsHour Weekend examines the lack of diversity in the tech industry. The giants of Silicon Valley -- Google, Twitter, Facebook -- report that just three to four percent of their workforce is black or Hispanic, and men outnumber women by more than two to one. Now, tech companies are investing hundreds of millions of dollars to address the imbalance. In New York, one camp is training such a new generation of software coders. NewsHour Special Correspondent Karla Murthy reports.

On Saturday, NewsHour Weekend explores the short-term housing rental industry giant, Airbnb, which now lists more than 1 million rooms available in 190 countries. The platform's largest market is in New York City, with more than 25,000 listings per night, and it's also where the debate over how to regulate short-term rentals is the most contentious. And in light of a report by the New York Attorney General that says nearly three-quarters of Airbnb's listings in the city were technically illegal, New York City is cracking down. Hari Sreenivasan reports.

On Sunday, NewsHour Weekend examines the unsung heroes of the African migration in the Mediterranean: the fisherman. As the civil war worsens, more migrants are being smuggled off the shores of Libya and end up stranded in neighboring Tunisian waters, leaving it up to those working at sea to rescue them. Already this year, Tunisian fisherman and coast guards have saved more than 800 migrants, and their work continues as the region's mass exodus persists. Lisa Desai reports.

Unlike traditional employees, independent contractors have no guarantee of hourly wages, no benefits and no safety net. But recent class-action lawsuits have alleged that many of the companies who employ these contractors are breaking the rules by misclassifying them as independent. Hari Sreenivasan reports.

On Sunday, NewsHour Weekend explores the issue of female genital mutilation in the United States. A recent report estimates that about 500,000 women and girls in the U.S. are at risk of or have been subjected to the practice. That's because when school lets out, countries that still have FGM increase the number of procedures they perform, according to a recent report. And in places where the practice is strictly prohibited, including the U.S., families often send their daughters back to their native countries to undergo the procedure. NewsHour's Megan Thompson reports.
