Wild Africa
Africa is the mother continent, the core from which all the other continents were torn away 100 million years ago. Since then, three factors have had profound consequences on its wildlife. This mighty block of land has stayed in much the same place - it stands alone and it straddles the equator. It has also been protected from crippling ice ages and destructive invasions as well as nurtured by gentle changes in climate and geology. As a result, animals and plants have flourished here more successfully than on any other continent. This is Africa - rich, diverse, fascinating, and the heart of the world. Time is the key to our series. Influenced by climate and geology, time has allowed Africa to accumulate the breathtaking variety of wildlife we see today.

Episode #106
Lakes and Rivers
Just as Africa constantly throws-up mountains which intercept moisture-laden clouds from the oceans, so the changing landscape also creates grooves and basins which channel and gather the precious moisture that falls on the high ground. Fresh water, light and warmth are the three fundamental elements that engender life. Rarely in Africa do these three come together, but when they do the continent explodes with life.

Episode #105
Jungle
At Africa's heart, there is a vast tropical rainforest - a tangled Jungle, stretching for five and a half thousand kilometres. To survive here is to grasp what rare opportunities you can. But in this endless, primeval world of plants, all is not as it at first seems. Over the millenia, rains have come and gone, rivers have snaked and weaved, an infinite number of trees has grown and fallen, and grasslands have been swallowed and reborn. The forest is not so permanent after all.

Coasts
Africa's coasts were formed by the break-up of Gondwanaland 100 million years ago. They define the familiar shape of this special continent, and touch on deserts, mountains, forests, wetlands and savannahs. This programme takes us back in time to witness the birth of Africa and also carries us on a spectacular journey around the edge of the continent.

Episode #103
Deserts
Rain does not fall evenly across the African continent. Some places are so far from mountain ranges and coasts that rainclouds evaporate before they reach them. In other places, cold ocean currents sweeping Africa's shores starve the land of moisture. As a whole, Africa is a dry continent and deserts dominate the landscape. This film is a celebration of the tenacity and ingenuity of life.

Savannah
In terms of age, savannah is Africa's teenage world. The newest and the most dynamic of all the environments, savannah snakes its way across the continent hemmed in between forests and deserts. A mixture of open woodlands and vast grassy plains, savannah is home to a wonderful variety of big cats as well as the greatest herds on earth today.

Mountains
The building of mountains was the next great event to shape the continent of Africa. In this film we travel in time from the spectacular Ethiopian highlands to the giants of the Great Rift Valley - the Aberdares, Mts Kenya, Meru and Elgon - taking the viewer to the top of the greatest of them all, Kilimanjaro. On our journey, we visit Africa's oldest peaks, the 80 million year old Atlas mountains in Morocco and the very newest - the Virungas - which still spout fire.
