Jerry Yarnell is launching a whole new series of painting shows. With a calm and reassuring style that is unmatched by any other art instructor, Jerry guides students through fine-art techniques that can be practiced at home. What separates Jerry's new series from his older work is the culmination of his entire career to date (over 30 years) brought to the viewer in the form of his best work ever.

Church in The Wildwood, PArt 1
Acrylic Painting.18x24 Horizontal. Another wonderful subject Jerry has selected from the United States as part of his quest to cover the entire 50 States: this time a little country church in South Dakota, Jerry has named this painting "Church in the Wildwood." Jerry starts with sketch of background land mass including an eroded bank. Uses # 10 bristle brush to establish a blending base then adding sunset colors. Jerry also shows blending with the hake brush to create softness. Jerry discusses values (the intensity of a color). Jerry shows feathering and shaping to give suggestion of edge of forest. He inserts area for road, and next uses the sable script brush to create distant, wispy trees in background. Jerry underpaints area for snow creating soft, blurry edge.

Church in The Wildwood, PArt 2
In episode 2, Jerry continues working on "Church in the Wildwood" -- a beautiful country church which was photographed in South Dakota. Using soft-vine charcoal, sketches in where the church will go and blocks in the church structure. Now Jerry uses #4 sable script brush to add in the intermediate-sized trees which are slightly larger than the trees inserted as part of episode 1. Now with #4 bristle brush to stretch trees (cedars, pines) to get shape you want. Jerry discusses light-source techniques. With #4 sable script brush adds more form to the trees (saplings, trunk, branches, etc.). Jerry then starts the development of drifting snow creating a hazy effect carefully leaving pockets of negative space.

In the third episode Jerry continues underpainting and most of the focus is on the church building. Then Jerry uses #4 chisel-edge brush to begin work on the church sides, roof, and steeple. Now uses either the #4 flat sable or #2 chisel-edge brush for overhanging shadow (makes roof appear to be protruding outward). With #6 bristle brush Jerry creates shadow to show melting effect along road. With #10 bristle, Jerry illustrates placing dark brush (eye-stopper) in right corner of painting - carefully not to cover entire area. Jerry sketches in large tree next with special emphasis on limb and blocks tree in. Last technique is adding light to make building appear old and washed- out, and adding snow on ridge.

In the final episode, Jerry spends a lot of time explaining how to paint in all of the details - specifically on the church: painting in the stain-glass windows and other minor details. Next Jerry adds the cedar/pine trees, large dead trees, weeds, and limbs. Then Jerry puts in the final highlights on snow and cast shadows and finishes by showing how to make the road look like muddy ruts.

Acrylic painting, 18x24 Horizontal. In this episode, Jerry explains the different types of canvas weaves and why you choose certain ones. In this case, he explains that we will be using a portrait smooth canvas to make blending colors easier. Then Jerry explains the specific color mixtures for underpainting this subject. Jerry then shows how to mottle all of the colors together using the hake brush and mister bottle to spray the canvas and keep it creamy for blending. After it dries Jerry takes his conte pencil and lightly sketches in the composition, then takes the #10 bristle brush showing how to dry-brush some lighter tones to prepare for the final color tones.

In the second episode, Jerry shows the viewers how to take the soft gray undertones that he used in the previous episode and begin to lighten them -- and using the #10 bristle brush adds the shapes of the light formations. Then Jerry shows his viewers how to use specific blending techniques to add brighter colors by gradually layering them. Then he underpaints the mountain range.

In the third episode, Jerry explains how to continue the process of dry-brush blending in the brighter colors by using the #6 bristle brush and using very tight circular motions. He is very specific in explaining how many layers of colors it takes to achieve the very bright colors needed to make this painting really glow - then finishes by adding some of the foreground-underpainting tones, shapes, and forms of the trees and mountains.

In our fifth and final episode, Jerry adds final highlights, rock formations, and details. Using #4 bristle, Jerry adds more paint to the center part of the falling water getting it bright and crisp keeping edges a bit blurry. Next Jerry uses #4 bristle brush to add warmer highlights to some of the waterfall rocks to make them pop a bit more -- giving some a 3-dimentional form. Now Jerry begins more highlights for trees still using #4 bristle brush. Adds contrast by including a bush area underneath the bridge and illustrates again his "tapping" technique. Continues final highlights and creating pockets of texture w/color. Adds beautiful rolling mist at bottom of painting and inserts tree limbs in darker value to add contrast as the grand finale.

In this episode, Jerry illustrates the use of a toothbrush to add water action and a fine-mist to various areas of the painting. Next using charcoal or a conte pencil, you can sketch in arches and railing details of the bridge. Next use #4 chisel-edge brush, block in background of arches, etc., of the bridge structure using darker tone. Next using script brush, begin blocking in some of limbs and tree trunks - then with darker mixture add contrasting values to same. With #4 round sable brush, Jerry fills in the bridge arches, rails, and posts. Now with #6 chisel-edge brush, Jerry uses a thick amount of paint to create the brighter, center part of the falling water.

In episode 3, Jerry shows how to create mist and haze at the base of the waterfall using again the "dry brush technique" glaze (which can also be used for smoke). This helps to connect your waterfall to the rocks. Using soft-vine charcoal, Jerry sketches in a couple of tree trunks using either the #2 or #4 chisel-edge brush. Now using #6 bristle brush, begin "tapping" in and shaping tree against misty background leaving good composition, negative space, and eye-flow. First form intermediate highlights are now added, forming the shape of the tree leaves a bit more. Next using #6 chisel-edge brush, Jerry adds another layer of white on the water.

In episode 2, Jerry starts with #10 bristle brush to continue underpainting the rocks of the waterfall. Next Jerry adds first layer of water falling through to create the path of water and a further illustration of creating the "shelves" for the waterfall while simultaneously creating pockets of negative space. Next Jerry works on some of the greenery around the waterfall edges and includes a "dabbing" technique. Jerry highlights rock formations and adds shadows.

As promised with subjects from every State in the United States, Jerry begins a painting from Oregon near Portland: Multnomah Falls which he has named this painting "Multnomah the Magnificent." Jerry uses soft-vine charcoal to sketch in some of the elements then begins the underpainting or blocking in sky and where the waterfall will be. Then Jerry begins mottling in where the trees and rock formations will be creating "shelves." Jerry creates various values to make the area look rocky. Jerry shows how to create suggestion of various tree shapes along top. The depth of the painting begins to appear as Jerry illustrates the various values. Jerry begins showing light which creates further development of rock formations.
