Snowmobiles - The Trailblazers Pt 1 -- Nowadays, when we drive nearly anywhere on a winter weekend, it isn't unusual to see snowmobiles loaded onto trailers, on their way to a trail or cabin. Some people wonder how they ever got along without one. It's hard to imagine that fifty years ago almost no one knew what a snow machine was. In 1955 Edgar Heteen built the first gas-powered sled for a customer at his business, Heteen Hoist and Derrick, in Roseau. The machines developed rapidly from there, and so did their market. On the first of a special two-part edition of ALBUM, we chart the rise of Arctic Cat and Polaris snowmobile companies in Minnesota, and the building popularity of the snow machine.

This magnificent vessel sailed the Great Lakes for 40 years carrying iron ore and V.I.P. guests for United States Steel. Her rich accommodations, including walnut paneled staterooms and oak dining room, earned her the title of "pride of the silver stackers."
