Close The Gap
Twin Cities Public Television's (tpt) Minnesota Channel, in partnership with The Itasca Project (a business led alliance focused on strengthening the future of our Twin Cities Metro area for all its citizens) presents the Close the Gap documentary series. This 5-part documentary shares the stories of the Minnesotans who put a face on the problems and some of the efforts to close the gaps created by race, class and place disparities and the hope and solutions that exist. Each of the five half-hour episodes features a series of stories that personify the problems as well as existing solutions to these disparities.

Close the Gap: Race Disparities shows how race and racial inequity are inextricably linked with the Twin Cities' past and future. In this episode, profiles of people of color facing challenges bring to life startling data on racial disparities in the Twin Cities. Stories and best practices for solutions are found in organizations like the Minnesota Indian Women's Resource center, the African American Men Project, and Neighborhood House as well as the work of a race awareness and self esteem building program The Skin I'm In.

Place Disparities

Close the Gap: Place Disparities shows the growing aspect of individual struggle and regional crisis in Minnesota. With limited transportation options, how do workers living in the center city get to the jobs that are more and more found in the suburbs when transportation options are limited? What does a look at the history and unsettling resurgence of school segregation in South Minneapolis mean for the entire regions future? The Institute on Race & Poverty offers a sobering statistical birds-eye view of these issues in the Twin Cities. Organizations like Pillsbury United Communities/Emerge providing access to jobs and La Clinica providing cultural understand to address health care disparities are examples of innovative work to cross the divides.
