From the 1870's through the turn of the century, massive farm operations of thousands upon thousands of acres in size covered the prairie of the Red River Valley. What was the cause of these farms and how did they shape farming on the northern plains? The bonanza farm story begins with the creation of the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1864. It was charted to build a rail line from the Great Lakes to Puget Sound, and was granted by the government a huge swath of land between the two points. The land grant was in checkerboard pattern: every other mile extending for twenty miles on either side of the track. With this land the railroad hoped to create an economic base to support the railway by selling land parcels to farmers and land developers. And succeed they did -- at least for a while. Thousands poured into the Dakota plains to work the bonanza farms. In this documentary , you'll explore the history of bonanza farms and hear the stories of the men who pioneered modern farming techniques on these giant agricultural businesses.
